Deuteronomy 28:2

Posted on 27 August 2024
Listen to this article

“And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.”

This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Blessings and Curses, found in Deuteronomy 28. In this chapter, Moses is addressing the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land, providing them with instructions and reminding them of the covenant God made with them.

Context:It is important to understand the context:The book of Deuteronomy records Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites, where he reviews their history, reiterates God’s law, and encourages obedience to God’s commandments as they prepare to possess the land promised to them.

Blessings through Obedience:Deuteronomy 28 begins with a list of blessings that would come upon the Israelites if they were obedient to God’s voice. These blessings encompass various aspects of their lives, including prosperity, fertility, victory over enemies, and divine favour.

Obedience as a Condition:The key condition for receiving these blessings is emphasised in Deuteronomy 28:2. It states that the blessings will come upon the Israelites and overtake them only if they “hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.” This means that their obedience to God’s commands is crucial for experiencing His blessings. It implies actively listening, obeying, and following God’s instructions.

Relationship with God:The verse reveals that the blessings are intimately tied to the Israelites’ relationship with God:By hearkening to God’s voice, they demonstrate their trust, faithfulness, and submission to Him. It highlights the importance of a personal and obedient relationship with God as the foundation for receiving His blessings.

Spiritual Application:While this verse was specifically addressed to the Israelites, we can draw a spiritual application from it. As believers today, our obedience to God’s Word is essential for experiencing His blessings and favour in our lives. When we listen attentively to God’s voice through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and our relationship with Him, we position ourselves to receive His abundant blessings.

Application to New Testament:In the New Testament, Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law, and we are justified by faith in Him. However, obedience is still a significant aspect of our relationship with God. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Our love for God is demonstrated through obedience to His teachings and living according to His Word.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 28:2 reminds us of the correlation between obedience to God’s voice and the blessings that follow. Just as the Israelites were called to hearken to the voice of the Lord, we are also encouraged to listen, obey, and follow God’s Word in our lives. Through our faithfulness and obedience, we position ourselves to receive His abundant blessings, both in this life and in eternity.
