Deuteronomy 28:31

Listen to this article

“Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them.”

This verse is a part of the blessings and curses that God outlined for the Israelites in the book of Deuteronomy. It specifically falls within the section that describes the curses that would come upon the Israelites if they disobeyed God’s commandments and turned away from Him.

In the preceding verses of Deuteronomy 28, God warned the Israelites that if they did not obey His commandments, their blessings would be replaced with curses. These curses would affect various aspects of their lives, including their crops, livestock, and personal possessions. Deuteronomy 28:31 specifically focuses on the loss of their livestock.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning:

“Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof”: This phrase refers to a scenario where the Israelites would witness the slaughter of their oxen. Oxen were valuable and served as a crucial asset for agricultural purposes, such as plowing fields. However, due to their disobedience, the Israelites would not be able to benefit from the labor of their oxen by consuming their meat.

“Thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee”: Here, the verse describes the loss of donkeys, which were also important domestic animals used for transportation and labor. The Israelites would experience the distressing sight of their donkeys being forcefully seized or stolen, and despite their desire for restoration, they would not be able to retrieve them.

“Thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to rescue them”: This part highlights another aspect of the punishment, where the Israelites’ sheep would be given to their enemies. Sheep were valuable for their wool, milk, and meat, and losing them would further add to their distress. The verse emphasizes that no one would be able to come to their aid or rescue their sheep from the hands of their enemies.

It is important to note that this verse is specifically addressed to the Israelites and pertains to the consequences they would face for disobeying God’s commandments. The curses outlined in this chapter served as a warning and a reminder for the Israelites to remain faithful and obedient to God.

Overall, Deuteronomy 28:31 underscores the severity of the punishment that would befall the Israelites if they turned away from God. It emphasizes the loss of their valuable livestock and the powerlessness they would feel in being unable to rescue or restore what was taken from them. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and faithfulness in maintaining a relationship with God and receiving His blessings.
