Deuteronomy 28:58

Listen to this article

“If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The LORD Thy God.”

This verse is found in the book of Deuteronomy, which is part of the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament. Deuteronomy is essentially a series of speeches given by Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land.

In Deuteronomy 28, Moses presents blessings and curses that would come upon the Israelites depending on their obedience or disobedience to God’s law. This chapter outlines the blessings that would result from obedience to God and the curses that would befall them if they turned away from Him.

In verse 58, Moses emphasizes the importance of observing and obeying all the words of the law written in the book of Deuteronomy. This call to obedience is given to the Israelites so that they may fear the name of the LORD their God.

Let’s break down this verse further:

“If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law”: This statement highlights the requirement for the Israelites to not only listen to the words of the law but also to diligently obey and carry them out. It emphasizes the importance of faithful obedience to God’s commands.

“That thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The LORD Thy God”: The purpose of observing and obeying the law is to cultivate a reverential fear of God’s glorious and fearful name. The LORD Thy God refers to Yahweh, the covenant name of God given to the Israelites. Reverential fear involves recognizing God’s authority, holiness, and power, leading to a deep respect and awe for Him.

This verse serves as a reminder of the covenant relationship between God and the Israelites. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s law, which was given to guide them in righteous living and to ensure their well-being. By faithfully following God’s commands, the Israelites would demonstrate their fear and reverence for Him.

It is worth noting that as Christians, while we are not under the Old Testament law in the same way as the Israelites, we can still draw valuable principles from this verse. It encourages us to fear and reverence God, seeking to live in obedience to His Word. Through obedience, we demonstrate our love for God and align ourselves with His will for our lives.

In summary, Deuteronomy 28:58 reminds us of the importance of faithfully observing and obeying God’s Word. By doing so, we cultivate a reverential fear of God and demonstrate our love for Him.
