Deuteronomy 3:2

Listen to this article

“And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.”

This verse is part of Moses’ recounting of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness and their encounters with various nations. It specifically refers to God’s instruction to Moses regarding the conquest of Og, the king of Bashan.

Let’s explore the verse in its context to gain a deeper understanding:

Historical Context:Deuteronomy is a book of the Torah, primarily composed of Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. At this point, the Israelites had already defeated Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and captured his land.

Divine Assurance:In Deuteronomy 3:2, God assures Moses not to fear Og, the king of Bashan. God promises to deliver Og, his people, and his land into Moses’ hand. This reassurance reflects God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and His protection over the Israelites.

Comparison with Sihon:The verse mentions Moses’ previous encounter with Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon. The reference serves to remind Moses of God’s victory over Sihon and to encourage him with the assurance that God would grant a similar triumph over Og.

Conquest and Possession:God’s intention was for the Israelites to possess the Promised Land, and this included engaging in battles with the inhabitants. The conquest of Og and the people of Bashan was part of God’s plan to fulfill His promise to the Israelites and provide them with their inheritance.

Key Lessons and Applications:

  • Trust in God’s Promises:Moses’ encounter with Og teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s promises. Just as God fulfilled His promise to deliver Sihon into their hands, He assures Moses of a similar victory over Og. We can apply this by trusting in God’s faithfulness and relying on His promises in our own lives.
  • God’s Protection and Deliverance:God’s reassurance to Moses demonstrates His protection and deliverance. In times of uncertainty or when facing challenges, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us, and He is able to deliver us from our enemies.
  • Obedience in God’s Plan:The conquest of Og was part of God’s plan for the Israelites to possess the Promised Land. Similarly, we should seek to understand and align ourselves with God’s will for our lives, obeying His commands and trusting His guidance.
  • Remembering God’s Past Faithfulness:Moses’ recollection of the victory over Sihon serves as a reminder of God’s past faithfulness. It is important for us to remember God’s past works in our lives, as they can encourage and strengthen our faith in present and future situations.

Overall, Deuteronomy 3:2 highlights God’s faithfulness, protection, and guidance in fulfilling His promises. It encourages us to trust in God, obey His commands, and remember His past faithfulness as we journey through our own lives of faith.
