Deuteronomy 3:21

Posted on 13 March 2024
Listen to this article

“And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.”

Historical Context:Deuteronomy is part of the fifth book of the Old Testament, which contains the speeches of Moses to the Israelites just before they entered the Promised Land. This verse occurs in a section where Moses recounts the victories and conquests that the Israelites had experienced under God’s guidance.

Leadership Transition:In this verse, Moses is addressing Joshua, who was chosen to be his successor as the leader of Israel after Moses’ death. Moses had been the leader who led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness for forty years. Now, as they were about to enter the Promised Land, God instructed Moses to transfer leadership to Joshua.

God’s Faithfulness:The verse highlights the faithfulness of God. Moses reminds Joshua that he had witnessed firsthand the victories and deliverance that the Lord had brought upon the two kings, Sihon and Og, whose lands the Israelites had conquered. This serves as a reminder to Joshua that God would continue to be with him and grant him victory over the kingdoms they would encounter as they entered the Promised Land.

Divine Assurance:The verse carries a promise from God that He would do to all the kingdoms in the land of Canaan what He had done to Sihon and Og. It is an assurance that God’s power and presence would be with Joshua and the Israelites as they faced the various nations in their path. God’s faithfulness and deliverance in the past were a foreshadowing of what He would continue to do for His people in the future.

Application:This verse has several applications for us today. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His ability to grant victory in our lives as we face challenges and obstacles. It also serves as a reminder that leadership transitions are part of God’s plan, and He equips and empowers individuals to carry out His purposes. Additionally, it encourages us to trust in God’s promises and His ability to fulfill them.

In summary, Deuteronomy 3:21 emphasizes God’s faithfulness, His promise to Joshua, and His assurance of victory as the Israelites entered the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder for us to trust in God’s faithfulness, rely on His promises, and recognize that He is with us in our own journeys.
