Deuteronomy 31:13

Listen to this article

“And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and serves as Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites. In this chapter, Moses is nearing the end of his life, and he is preparing to transfer leadership to Joshua. Moses reiterates God’s commands, instructs the people to be strong and courageous, and emphasises the importance of keeping God’s law.

Teaching Children:Deuteronomy 31:13 focuses on the importance of teaching children to fear the Lord. Here, Moses specifically addresses the Israelites’ children who have not yet known anything about God’s law. He highlights the responsibility of parents and leaders to ensure that the next generation learns to revere and obey the Lord.

Fear of the Lord:The phrase “fear the LORD” does not imply a sense of terror or anxiety. Instead, it denotes a deep respect, reverence, and awe for God, acknowledging His sovereignty, holiness, and authority. Fearing the Lord involves recognising His greatness and submitting to His will, living in accordance with His commandments.

Importance of Teaching:Moses emphasises the significance of instructing children in the ways of the Lord. By teaching them God’s laws and principles, parents and leaders play a crucial role in passing down the faith from one generation to the next. Teaching children about God cultivates a foundation of knowledge, reverence, and faithfulness, enabling them to develop a personal relationship with the Lord.

Lifelong Commitment:Moses emphasises that teaching children to fear the Lord should continue as long as the Israelites dwell in the land they are about to possess. This highlights the perpetual nature of the commitment to passing down faith to successive generations. It is an ongoing responsibility that requires consistent effort and dedication.

Application:As believers today, Deuteronomy 31:13 reminds us of the importance of teaching the younger generation about God and His ways. We should strive to pass on our faith to children, whether they are our own children, younger family members, or those within our sphere of influence. This involves not only teaching them about God but also modelling a life of faith, demonstrating the love and character of Christ.

Continuity of Faith:The verse also prompts us to consider the broader scope of transmitting faith throughout generations. Just as the Israelites were called to pass down their knowledge of God’s law, we, as followers of Christ, have a responsibility to ensure the continuity of the Christian faith. This involves sharing the Gospel, making disciples, and mentoring others in their journey of faith.
