Deuteronomy 31:18

Listen to this article

“And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and it contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses is speaking to the people of Israel, warning them about the consequences of turning away from God and worshiping other gods.

God’s Promise:The verse begins with the phrase, “And I will surely hide my face in that day.” This is a powerful statement from God indicating His judgment and withdrawal of His favour and protection from the Israelites. When God hides His face, it symbolises His displeasure and the removal of His presence and blessings.

Evil Actions:The verse continues, “for all the evils which they shall have wrought.” Here, God is addressing the Israelites’ future actions, warning them that they will bring about evil consequences upon themselves. The Israelites were prone to idolatry and turning to other gods, which was a direct violation of the first commandment to worship the Lord alone.

Turning to Other Gods:The verse concludes, “in that they are turned unto other gods.” This phrase emphasises the specific sin that the Israelites were committing-turning away from the true God and worshiping false gods. This act of idolatry was not only a violation of the covenant between God and His people but also an abandonment of their trust and devotion to Him.

Lessons for us today:

  • Faithfulness to God:The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and not turning to other gods or idols. In our lives, we may face various temptations and distractions that can draw us away from God’s path. This verse encourages us to stay steadfast in our faith and not compromise our devotion to Him.
  • Consequences of Sin:The verse highlights the serious consequences of sin and disobedience. God’s withdrawal of His favour and protection should serve as a sobering reminder that our actions have real consequences. It is essential for us to strive for righteousness and obedience, knowing that sin can separate us from experiencing the fullness of God’s blessings.
  • God’s Justice and Mercy:While the verse speaks of God hiding His face, it is important to note that throughout the Bible, we also see His mercy and willingness to forgive. Though the Israelites faced judgment for their disobedience, God remained faithful to His promises and provided them with opportunities for repentance and restoration. This reminds us that even in our own failings, we can turn to God in repentance and find His forgiveness and grace.

Overall, Deuteronomy 31:18 serves as a warning against idolatry and a call to remain faithful to God. It reminds us of the consequences of turning away from Him and emphasises the need for obedience and devotion in our relationship with the Lord.
