Deuteronomy 31:3

Posted on 3 September 2024
Listen to this article

"The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said."

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is attributed to Moses. It contains his final addresses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 31, Moses prepares the people for his impending death and appoints Joshua as his successor to lead the Israelites into the land of Canaan.

Trust in God’s Presence:In this verse, Moses assures the Israelites that the Lord their God will go before them. It emphasises the divine presence and guidance of God. As they faced numerous nations occupying the land of Canaan, God promised to go ahead of them, leading the way. This assurance would strengthen their faith and encourage them to trust in God’s protection and provision.

God’s Promise of Victory:The verse also declares that God will destroy the nations that stood in the way of the Israelites and that they would possess the land. This highlights God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises. The Israelites were not to rely on their own strength or military might, but rather on God’s power and intervention. They were called to be obedient and faithful to God’s commands, knowing that victory was assured because of His presence and promise.

Joshua’s Leadership:Moses mentions Joshua specifically, stating that he would go before the people as the appointed leader. Joshua had been Moses’ assistant and was chosen by God to succeed him. Moses had laid hands on Joshua, commissioning and empowering him for the task. Joshua’s role as a faithful and courageous leader would be crucial in leading the Israelites into the Promised Land.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s Guidance: Just as the Israelites were called to trust in God’s guidance, we too are called to trust in Him. In our journey through life, we may face challenges and uncertainties, but we can have confidence that God goes before us. He knows the way and will lead us if we seek His direction and trust in His wisdom.
  • Reliance on God’s Strength: The Israelites were reminded that victory was not dependent on their own abilities, but on God’s power. Similarly, we are called to rely on God’s strength rather than our own. When we face obstacles or battles, we can lean on God’s might and seek His help. Our confidence should rest in Him, knowing that He is able to overcome any opposition.
  • Leadership and Succession: The transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua serves as a reminder of the importance of leadership within the community of believers. Just as Joshua was called and prepared to lead, leaders today are chosen and appointed by God to guide His people. Additionally, this verse encourages us to be supportive and prayerful for those who assume leadership roles, recognising that God’s hand is upon them.

Remember, as you engage in Bible study, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consult commentaries or study guides for deeper insights and understanding.
