Deuteronomy 31:7

Posted on 3 September 2024
Listen to this article

“And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and contains the farewell speeches of Moses to the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses is addressing Joshua, who would succeed him as the leader of the Israelites.

Leadership transition:Moses had led the Israelites for forty years, but he knew that he would not be able to enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience to God’s command. Therefore, he called Joshua to prepare him for the task of leading the people into the land that God had promised to their ancestors.

Strength and courage:Moses encouraged Joshua to be strong and courageous. The task of leading a whole nation into a new land was daunting, and Joshua would face various challenges along the way. However, Moses assured Joshua that he had the support of both God and the people. This message of strength and courage applies not only to Joshua but to all believers who are called to step into positions of leadership or face challenging circumstances.

God’s faithfulness:Moses reminded Joshua of God’s promise to give the land to the Israelites. This was a covenant promise that God had made to their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses wanted to ensure that Joshua understood the significance of this promise and the responsibility that came with it.

Divine inheritance:Moses charged Joshua with the task of leading the people into the Promised Land and causing them to inherit it. The land was not only a physical possession; it was a divine inheritance for the people of Israel. It represented God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His fulfillment of His promises. This highlights the importance of obedience and following God’s direction in order to receive the blessings and promises He has for us.

Application:Deuteronomy 31:7 teaches us several lessons. Firstly, it reminds us that leadership transitions are a natural part of life, and we should be ready to pass the baton to others when the time comes. Secondly, it encourages us to be strong and courageous in the face of challenges and to trust in God’s faithfulness. Lastly, it emphasizes the significance of inheriting God’s promises through obedience and following His will.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 31:7 conveys Moses’ charge to Joshua to be strong and courageous as he leads the Israelites into the Promised Land. This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness, the importance of leadership transitions, and the significance of inheriting God’s promises through obedience.
