Deuteronomy 32:28

Listen to this article

“For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they entered the Promised Land. In chapter 32, Moses delivers a song of praise and warning to the Israelites, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and warning them of the consequences of turning away from Him.

Historical Background:This verse is part of Moses’ prophetic song, often referred to as the Song of Moses. It was given to the Israelites as a witness and reminder of God’s covenant with them and the consequences of disobedience. The verse describes the sad state of the Israelites, highlighting their lack of wisdom and understanding.

Spiritual Lesson:

  • The Consequence of Ignorance: The verse portrays the Israelites as a nation lacking counsel and understanding. This implies that they had strayed from the wisdom and knowledge of God. Their lack of guidance and understanding was a result of turning away from God’s commands and seeking their own ways. This serves as a warning to us today that when we neglect God’s Word and His wisdom, we can become spiritually ignorant and prone to making unwise decisions.
  • The Importance of Seeking Counsel: The verse emphasizes the significance of seeking counsel and understanding. God desires His people to seek His guidance and wisdom in all aspects of life. Proverbs 11:14 states, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Seeking wise counsel from godly sources and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit helps us make sound decisions and avoid the pitfalls of ignorance and unwise choices.
  • The Need for Spiritual Understanding: The verse highlights the lack of understanding among the Israelites. They failed to grasp the significance of their relationship with God and His laws. Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” As believers, we are called to pursue spiritual understanding and discernment, which comes through studying God’s Word, prayer, and the illumination of the Holy Spirit. It enables us to discern God’s will, recognize truth, and make choices that align with His purposes.

Application:

  • Seek God’s Wisdom:Make it a habit to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in all areas of life. Study the Scriptures, meditate on God’s Word, and pray for understanding. James 1:5 encourages us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
  • Surround Yourself with Wise Counsel:Seek out godly mentors, pastors, or mature believers who can provide wise counsel and guidance. Proverbs 13:20 advises, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” Surrounding yourself with those who fear the Lord and possess spiritual understanding can greatly impact your growth and decision-making.
  • Cultivate Understanding:Invest time in studying and understanding God’s Word. Develop a habit of reflecting on Scripture, attending Bible studies or classes, and engaging in meaningful discussions with other believers. Psalm 119:130 declares, “The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.”

In summary, Deuteronomy 32:28 reminds us of the consequences of turning away from God’s wisdom and understanding. It encourages us to seek counsel, pursue spiritual understanding, and rely on God’s guidance in all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we can avoid the perils of ignorance and make wise choices that align with God’s will.
