Deuteronomy 32:34

Posted on 5 September 2024
Listen to this article

“Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?”

Context:Deuteronomy 32 is known as the Song of Moses, which he delivered to the Israelites just before his death. This chapter is a powerful poetic song that recounts Israel’s history, their rebellion against God, and the consequences they faced as a result. In verse 34, Moses speaks on behalf of God, reminding the people that their actions have not gone unnoticed and that there will be a reckoning for their disobedience.

God’s Omniscience:The verse begins with the statement, “Is not this laid up in store with me.” Here, God declares that He is fully aware of everything that His people have done. The phrase “laid up in store” implies that God has carefully recorded and preserved every action, whether good or evil. This highlights God’s omniscience, His all-knowing nature. Nothing escapes His attention, and He keeps an accurate account of everything.

Sealed up among my treasures:The verse continues, “and sealed up among my treasures.” This phrase emphasizes the certainty of divine judgment. When something is sealed, it signifies that it is securely hidden or preserved. In this context, it refers to the record of the Israelites’ sins, which is securely stored among God’s treasures. The sealing indicates that God’s judgment is certain and that the consequences of their actions will be dealt with at the appointed time.

The Consequences of Sin:Throughout the Song of Moses, the consequences of Israel’s disobedience are reiterated. This verse serves as a reminder that sin does not go unpunished. Although God is patient and merciful, there comes a point when His justice demands accountability. The Israelites’ rebellion against God would eventually lead to their exile and suffering.

God’s Faithfulness and Judgment:Despite the impending judgment, this verse also reflects God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Israel. The fact that their sins are “laid up in store” implies that God is withholding immediate judgment, allowing time for repentance. However, the sealing suggests that the consequences are certain and will be executed according to God’s timing. God’s faithfulness to His promises includes both blessings and discipline, depending on the people’s response to His commands.

Application:Deuteronomy 32:34 serves as a reminder to us today that our actions are not hidden from God. He knows our hearts, motives, and every deed. It emphasizes the importance of living a life of obedience and righteousness before Him. We should be mindful that although God is patient and gracious, there will be a day of reckoning when we will be held accountable for our actions.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 32:34 reminds us of God’s omniscience, the certainty of His judgment, and the need for obedience. It highlights the balance between God’s faithfulness to His covenant and the consequences of sin. As we reflect on this verse, may it encourage us to live in a manner pleasing to God, recognizing that our actions have consequences both in this life and in eternity.
