Deuteronomy 32:46

Posted on 5 September 2024
Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.”

Context: The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which consists of the first five books of the Bible. It contains the final speeches of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses is nearing the end of his life and is giving his last exhortation to the people, emphasizing the importance of the words of the law.

Set your hearts: Moses urges the Israelites to “set their hearts” on the words he testifies among them. This phrase implies an intentional focus and dedication to understanding and applying the law in their lives. It involves a personal commitment to internalize God’s instructions and make them a guiding principle.

Testify among you: Moses, as the mediator between God and the Israelites, had received the law directly from God and was delivering it to the people. The words he spoke were a testimony of God’s commandments, statutes, and ordinances. They were not merely Moses’ own ideas but divine instructions for the Israelites’ welfare and relationship with God.

Command your children: Moses emphasizes the intergenerational transmission of God’s law. The responsibility to observe and do the words of the law extends not only to the present generation but also to future generations. Parents are instructed to pass down the knowledge and practice of God’s commandments to their children, ensuring the continuity of faith and obedience in the nation of Israel.

All the words of this law: The phrase “all the words of this law” refers to the entirety of God’s instructions, as revealed in the Mosaic law. It encompasses the commandments, statutes, judgments, and moral principles given to the Israelites. Moses emphasizes the importance of observing and doing the entirety of God’s law rather than picking and choosing which parts to follow.

Commitment and focus: The verse encourages believers to wholeheartedly devote themselves to the study and application of God’s Word. It implies an active effort to understand, internalize, and live out the principles and commandments found in the Scriptures.

Passing on the faith: The verse highlights the vital role of parents and older generations in passing down the knowledge and practice of God’s Word to the younger generation. It underscores the responsibility to teach and model the ways of the Lord to ensure the continuation of faith in future generations.

Complete obedience: Moses emphasizes the importance of observing and doing “all the words of this law.” It calls for a comprehensive commitment to God’s commandments without selective adherence. God desires His people to follow His instructions in their entirety, recognizing the wisdom and righteousness contained within them.
