Deuteronomy 32:9

Posted on 5 September 2024
Listen to this article

“For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.”

Context:Deuteronomy 32 is often referred to as the "Song of Moses." In this song, Moses recounts God’s faithfulness, the Israelites’ rebellion, and the consequences of their disobedience. The verse in question, Deuteronomy 32:9, emphasises God’s chosen people and His inheritance.

God’s Portion:The verse begins with the statement, "For the LORD’S portion is his people." This phrase highlights God’s ownership and special relationship with the Israelites. God chose the descendants of Jacob (Israel) to be His own people (Exodus 6:7), and they were set apart as a holy nation (Deuteronomy 7:6). As God’s portion, the Israelites held a unique and privileged position among the nations.

Jacob as God’s Inheritance:The verse continues, "Jacob is the lot of his inheritance." Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel (Genesis 32:28), was the forefather of the Israelite nation. Here, "lot" refers to the portion or possession that someone receives. God chose Jacob and his descendants as His inheritance, signifying the divine favour and love bestowed upon the people of Israel.

God’s Faithfulness and Covenant:Deuteronomy 32:9 reflects God’s faithfulness to the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 17:7-8; Genesis 26:3-4; Genesis 28:13-14). Despite the Israelites’ shortcomings and rebelliousness, God remained committed to His chosen people. The verse serves as a reminder of God’s enduring love and His unchanging commitment to the nation of Israel.

Application:While Deuteronomy 32:9 specifically addresses the Israelites as God’s chosen people, there are broader applications for believers today. In the New Testament, Christians are referred to as God’s chosen people and a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). Just as God had a special relationship with Israel, Christians are called to be set apart and to live as God’s representatives in the world.

The verse also emphasises the concept of inheritance. As believers, we are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), sharing in the inheritance of eternal life and the blessings of God’s kingdom. This truth should encourage us to live in a manner worthy of our calling, seeking to honour and serve God faithfully.

In summary, Deuteronomy 32:9 highlights God’s ownership of His people, the Israelites, and their privileged position as His chosen inheritance. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness to the covenant and serves as a reminder of His enduring love. For believers today, it points to the concept of being chosen by God and sharing in the inheritance as co-heirs with Christ.
