Deuteronomy 33:4

Posted on 6 September 2024
Listen to this article

“Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.”

Deuteronomy 33:4 is part of a larger passage known as the Blessing of Moses, where Moses pronounces blessings upon the twelve tribes of Israel before his death. This particular verse refers to Moses as the one who commanded the Israelites a law, which is considered the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.

Here are some key points to consider in understanding this verse:

  • Moses as the Lawgiver: Moses played a pivotal role as the lawgiver for the Israelites. God chose him to receive the Law on Mount Sinai and deliver it to the people. The law given through Moses included the Ten Commandments and various other statutes and ordinances, forming the foundation of the Israelites’ religious, moral, and civil life. Moses’ role as the lawgiver demonstrates his unique position and authority in guiding the Israelites.
  • The Inheritance of the Congregation of Jacob: The term “inheritance” in this context refers to the divine revelation of the law as a precious possession entrusted to the Israelites. The congregation of Jacob refers to the descendants of Jacob (also known as Israel), who were the chosen people of God. They received the inheritance of the law as a means of understanding God’s will and as a guide for righteous living.
  • The Significance of the Law: The law given by Moses served several important purposes. It revealed the character and expectations of God, outlining principles of justice, righteousness, and holiness. The law provided guidelines for the Israelites’ moral and ethical conduct, their relationship with God, and their interactions with one another. It emphasized obedience and reverence for God and established a framework for the Israelites’ social and religious life.
  • Continuity with Jacob’s Covenant: By referencing the “congregation of Jacob,” Deuteronomy 33:4 highlights the continuity of God’s covenant with the descendants of Jacob. The law given by Moses was not a new set of rules but an extension and clarification of the covenant God had established with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses reinforced the foundational principles and renewed the covenantal relationship between God and the people of Israel.
  • Application for Believers: While Deuteronomy 33:4 specifically addresses the Israelites, there are valuable lessons that can be applied by believers today. The law given by Moses teaches us about God’s nature, His expectations for His people, and the principles of righteous living. Christians can learn from the moral and ethical principles outlined in the Old Testament law, recognizing the importance of obedience, reverence, and maintaining a covenantal relationship with God.

Application:In summary, Deuteronomy 33:4 highlights Moses’ role as the lawgiver and emphasizes the inheritance of the law given to the congregation of Jacob. This verse underscores the significance of the law as a guide for the Israelites’ relationship with God and their conduct in various aspects of life. While specifically addressed to the Israelites, the principles of obedience and reverence for God can still be applied by believers today.
