Deuteronomy 4:45

Listen to this article

“Those were the cities which Moses gave for inheritance unto the tribes of Israel in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.”

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. It consists mainly of speeches attributed to Moses, addressed to the Israelites, just before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is recounting the cities that he gave as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel. To gain a better understanding of Deuteronomy 4:45, it’s helpful to consider the surrounding context and key themes within the book of Deuteronomy.

Historical Background:Deuteronomy is set at the end of the Israelites’ 40-year wilderness journey and just before their entry into the Promised Land. Moses, under God’s guidance, is reminding the Israelites of God’s laws and their covenant with Him. It serves as a restatement and clarification of the Mosaic Law.

The Promised Land:The Promised Land refers to the land of Canaan, which God had promised to Abraham and his descendants. In Deuteronomy, Moses recounts their journey and emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commands to receive the blessings of dwelling securely in the land.

Inheritance of the Tribes:In Deuteronomy 4:45, Moses specifically mentions the cities that he assigned as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel. This points to the division of the land among the twelve tribes, as described in later chapters. The land was apportioned to each tribe based on their size and inheritance rights.

Significance of the Cities:The cities mentioned here were allocated to the tribes in the plains of Moab, situated on the eastern side of the Jordan River near Jericho. These cities were an essential part of the land given to Israel. They provided dwelling places, centers for governance, and security for the tribes as they settled into the Promised Land.

Symbolic and Spiritual Lessons:While Deuteronomy 4:45 primarily serves as a historical account, we can draw spiritual lessons from it. The allocation of cities to the tribes reflects God’s provision and faithfulness to His people. It reminds us of God’s desire for His people to dwell securely and have a sense of belonging. Additionally, the inheritance of the land points to the promises of God fulfilled. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness to keep His word and honour the covenant made with the patriarchs. The physical land allocation also serves as a reminder of the spiritual inheritance that believers have in Christ, where we become co‑heirs with Him (Romans 8:17).

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 4:45 records the cities that Moses assigned as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel in the plains of Moab. While it provides historical context, it also highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and the significance of land inheritance. As with the entire book of Deuteronomy, it reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the blessings that come from following Him.
