Deuteronomy 5:5

Posted on 7 April 2024
Listen to this article

"I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to shew you the word of the Lord: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount; saying,"

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and serves as a recapitulation and elaboration of the laws given to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It is a book of reminders, exhortations, and instructions given by Moses before the Israelites entered the Promised Land. Chapter 5 contains the repetition of the Ten Commandments, which were originally given in Exodus 20.

Moses as Mediator:In this verse, Moses reminds the Israelites of their encounter with God at Mount Sinai when the Ten Commandments were given. The verse emphasizes Moses’ role as the mediator between God and the people. Moses stood as an intermediary, receiving the word of the Lord and delivering it to the people. The presence of God was marked by fire and smoke, which caused fear among the people, preventing them from ascending the mountain.

Fear of God’s Presence:The mention of the people being afraid by reason of the fire highlights the awe-inspiring presence of God. The manifestation of God’s glory in the form of fire on the mountain made the Israelites fearful. This fear was not a negative emotion but a reverent awe in the presence of the Almighty. It demonstrates the holiness and majesty of God, which caused the people to recognize their own unworthiness and inadequacy.

Importance of Mediation:Moses’ position as the mediator was crucial in this context. His role was to stand between the people and God, acting as a conduit for the communication of God’s word. The people recognized their inability to approach God directly due to their fear and perceived unworthiness. Moses fulfilled the role of a faithful leader, delivering God’s commands and guidance to the Israelites.

Lessons for Believers:While the specific context of Deuteronomy 5:5 relates to the Israelites’ experience at Mount Sinai, there are relevant lessons for believers today. We see the significance of having a mediator in the person of Jesus Christ. Just as Moses mediated between God and the people, Jesus acts as the ultimate Mediator between God and humanity. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus provides access to the Father for all who believe in Him (1 Timothy 2:5).

Reverence and Awe:The fear and awe the Israelites experienced in the presence of God remind us of the importance of reverence in our relationship with Him. While we can approach God boldly through Christ, we should never lose sight of His holiness, majesty, and power. Recognizing God’s greatness and awesomeness helps us maintain a humble and worshipful attitude towards Him.

Obeying God’s Word:The verse also underscores the significance of receiving and obeying God’s word. The people stood at a distance, afraid to approach the mountain, and relied on Moses to communicate God’s commands to them. Today, we have the complete revelation of God’s word in the Bible. We should seek to understand and obey His commands, recognizing that His word is a guide for righteous living and a reflection of His character.
