Deuteronomy 6:20

Posted on 7 April 2024
Listen to this article

"And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?"

Context:The book of Deuteronomy contains Moses’ final instructions to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this chapter, Moses emphasises the importance of loving and obeying God with all their hearts.

Parental Responsibility:Deuteronomy 6:20 addresses the future scenario where a son asks his parents about the meaning of the testimonies, statutes, and judgments commanded by God. It highlights the importance of passing down spiritual knowledge from one generation to the next.

Teachable Moments:This verse recognises that children may have questions about the laws and commandments of God. It encourages parents to be prepared to teach and explain these principles to their children when they inquire. It is an opportunity for parents to pass on their faith and understanding of God’s ways to the next generation.

The Purpose of Testimonies, Statutes, and Judgments:The testimonies, statutes, and judgments mentioned in this verse refer to the laws and commandments given by God to the Israelites. These laws served as a guide for righteous living, promoting justice, and establishing a holy and distinct nation.

Passing on Faith:The verse implies that children should be educated about the testimonies, statutes, and judgments to understand and embrace the covenant relationship between God and His people. It is essential for parents to provide spiritual instruction, ensuring that their children know the reasons behind God’s commandments and can grow in their faith.

Application:Deuteronomy 6:20 highlights the importance of intergenerational faithfulness and the responsibility of parents to nurture their children’s spiritual growth. It reminds us that teaching our children about God’s commandments is crucial, allowing them to understand and embrace their faith fully.

Lessons for Today:Although this verse was written in an ancient context, the underlying principles still apply today. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in guiding the spiritual development of their children. When children ask questions about God, His Word, or faith-related matters, it is an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations and provide them with a solid foundation of biblical understanding.

Remember, as we study the Bible, it is beneficial to consider the surrounding verses and the broader message of the passage to gain a comprehensive understanding.
