Deuteronomy 6:23

Listen to this article

“And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah. It contains the final words of Moses to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is reminding the people of how God had delivered them from Egypt and led them toward their inheritance.

Deliverance from Egypt:The verse begins by acknowledging that God brought the Israelites out of Egypt. This refers to the Exodus, a significant event in the history of Israel. God, through Moses, rescued the Israelites from slavery and oppression in Egypt, demonstrating His power and faithfulness. This deliverance marked the beginning of their journey toward the land promised to their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God’s intention:The verse continues by stating that God brought them out of Egypt to bring them into the Promised Land. God’s purpose was to fulfill the covenant He made with their forefathers and give the land to the Israelites as an inheritance. Despite their initial enslavement, God had a plan to deliver them and establish them in a land flowing with milk and honey.

Faithfulness to His promise:The final part of the verse emphasizes that God was faithful to His promise. He had sworn to their fathers‑Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob‑that He would give their descendants this land. By bringing the Israelites out of Egypt and leading them through the wilderness, God was actively fulfilling His promise and demonstrating His faithfulness to the covenant.

Key Lessons from Deuteronomy 6:23:

  • God’s deliverance:This verse reminds us of God’s power and faithfulness in delivering His people. It teaches us that God is capable of bringing us out of difficult and challenging situations. He is our deliverer and has a plan to rescue us from bondage.
  • God’s purpose:God had a specific purpose for bringing the Israelites out of Egypt‑to give them the Promised Land. Similarly, God has a purpose for each of our lives. He leads us and guides us towards fulfilling His plans. We should seek His guidance and trust in His direction.
  • God’s faithfulness:The verse highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises. Just as He fulfilled His covenant with the forefathers of Israel, we can trust that God will be faithful to His promises in our lives. He is a God who keeps His word and can be relied upon.
