Deuteronomy 7:11

Listen to this article

“Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.”

Context:The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which consists of the first five books of the Bible. Deuteronomy is primarily Moses’ farewell address to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is reiterating the importance of obeying God’s commandments.

Obedience to God’s Commandments:The verse begins with the command to “keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments.” God had given the Israelites a set of laws and regulations to govern their lives and maintain a covenantal relationship with Him. Obedience to these commandments was crucial for their spiritual and moral well-being.

Comprehensive Obedience:The verse emphasizes that the Israelites were to keep not only the commandments but also the statutes and judgments. The commandments referred to the moral laws given by God, while the statutes and judgments referred to the specific regulations and rules for their civil and religious life. It was not enough for them to merely know these laws; they were expected to live them out in practice.

Immediate Obedience:Moses emphasizes that the commandments, statutes, and judgments were to be followed “this day.” This underscores the urgency and immediacy of obedience. The Israelites were not to delay or procrastinate in fulfilling their responsibilities toward God. It was a call to prompt and unwavering obedience.

Application for Christians today:While Deuteronomy 7:11 was originally addressed to the Israelites, there are important principles that Christians can apply to their lives today. Though we are not bound by the ceremonial and civil laws of the Old Testament, the moral principles underlying them still hold true. As followers of Christ, we are called to obey God’s commandments, which are summarized in Jesus’ teachings of loving God with all our hearts and loving our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40).

The Grace of Obedience:It is essential to note that obedience should flow from a heart of love and gratitude towards God, rather than a legalistic mindset. The ability to keep God’s commandments comes from His grace and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As Christians, we are empowered by God’s grace to live a life that pleases Him and reflects His character.

In summary, Deuteronomy 7:11 emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s commandments, statutes, and judgments. It highlights the need for immediate and comprehensive obedience and reminds us of the grace and empowerment we receive from God to live a life that honors Him. As we seek to follow Christ, may we strive to keep His commandments out of love and gratitude for all He has done for us.
