Deuteronomy 9:19

Listen to this article

“For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you. But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also.”

This verse is part of Moses’ recounting of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness in the book of Deuteronomy. It refers to a specific incident when Moses interceded on behalf of the Israelites after they had sinned greatly against God by worshipping the golden calf (Exodus 32:1-35).

Here are a few key points and lessons we can draw from Deuteronomy 9:19:

Moses’ Fear:The verse begins with Moses expressing his fear of God’s anger and hot displeasure. He recognised the seriousness of the Israelites’ sin and the potential consequences they could face. This fear demonstrates Moses’ deep reverence for God and his understanding of the holiness and righteousness of the Lord.

Intercession:Despite his fear, Moses did not distance himself from the people or abandon them. Instead, he chose to intercede on their behalf. Moses acted as a mediator, pleading with God for mercy and forgiveness for the people. This demonstrates Moses’ love for the Israelites and his willingness to stand in the gap between them and God, advocating for their salvation.

God’s Response:The latter part of the verse reveals that the Lord hearkened or listened to Moses’ plea. Despite the Israelites’ grave sin, God showed mercy and withheld His immediate judgment. This highlights God’s compassion, patience, and willingness to respond to genuine intercession and repentance.

Lessons from Deuteronomy 9:19:

  • Fear of God:We should have a healthy fear and reverence for God, acknowledging His holiness and righteousness. This fear should motivate us to live in accordance with His commandments and seek forgiveness when we fall short.
  • Intercession:Just as Moses interceded for the Israelites, we can intercede for others who have sinned or are in need. Through prayer and advocacy, we can stand in the gap, appealing to God’s mercy and forgiveness on their behalf.
  • God’s Mercy:Deuteronomy 9:19 reminds us that God is merciful and compassionate. Even when we deserve punishment, He listens to our pleas and extends grace to those who sincerely repent and seek Him.
  • Relationship with God:Moses’ intercession demonstrates the closeness of his relationship with God. We, too, can develop a deep relationship with the Lord through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His presence daily.

In summary, Deuteronomy 9:19 teaches us about the fear of God, the power of intercession, and God’s mercy and willingness to respond to genuine repentance. It reminds us of the importance of our relationship with God and our role as mediators for others in need.
