Deuteronomy Chapter 1

Summery

Deuteronomy 1 recounts the events that took place after the Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, just before they entered the Promised Land. Moses addresses the people, reminding them of God’s promise to give them the land and appointing leaders from each tribe. He recalls their journey from Horeb (Mount Sinai) and their encounters with various nations along the way. Moses acknowledges the need for assistance in governing the large population, so he appoints wise and experienced men as judges to help resolve disputes.

However, Moses also recounts the people’s lack of faith and rebellion against God. He recalls the incident of sending spies to explore the land of Canaan, where the majority gave a negative report, which resulted in the people’s fear and disobedience. Moses reminds the Israelites of God’s anger at their disbelief, which led to their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness as punishment.

Throughout the chapter, Moses emphasizes God’s faithfulness and guidance, despite the Israelites’ disobedience. He encourages the people to trust in God and recounts their victories against various nations when they followed God’s instructions.
