Deuteronomy 10 recounts the events following Moses’ descent from Mount Sinai with the second set of stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments. God instructed Moses to make an ark of acacia wood to house the tablets, and the people of Israel journeyed from the wells of Bene Jaakan to Moserah. At that time, Aaron passed away, and the Levites were chosen to carry the ark of the covenant.
Moses then recalls the incident when the Israelites worshiped the golden calf, explaining how he interceded on their behalf, pleading with God not to destroy them. He reminds the people of their rebellion and God’s mercy in sparing them. Moses emphasizes that God’s commandments and statutes are meant for their own good and that they should fear and love Him.
The chapter concludes with Moses urging the Israelites to circumcise their hearts and no longer be stiff-necked. He emphasizes that God is the true God of gods, the Lord of lords, and the great and mighty God who shows no partiality and defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow. Moses implores the people to love and serve God, and he reminds them of their journey through the wilderness and God’s faithfulness in providing for their needs.
