Deuteronomy 29 records Moses’ speech to the Israelites, just before they entered the Promised Land. Moses reminded them of the covenant between them and God, urging them to remain faithful and obedient. He recounted how God had protected and provided for them during their wilderness journey, emphasizing that their present and future blessings depended on their loyalty to the covenant.
Moses stressed that the covenant encompassed all Israelites, including future generations and foreigners among them. He warned against idolatry and emphasized the importance of wholehearted devotion to God. Moses cautioned that failure to uphold the covenant would result in severe consequences, including exile and devastation.
He urged the people to reflect on their history, the miracles they had witnessed, and the lessons learned. Moses emphasized that they stood before God, with a choice between life and death, blessing and cursing. He implored them to choose life by loving and obeying God, so that they and their descendants would prosper.
In this chapter, Moses laid the foundation for the Israelites’ commitment to the covenant and set the stage for their future as they prepared to enter the Promised Land.
