Deuteronomy 9 recounts Moses addressing the Israelites, reminding them of their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Moses warns them not to forget the miracles and power of God that brought them out of slavery. He emphasizes that their success in conquering the land is not due to their righteousness but because of God’s faithfulness and the wickedness of the nations they will dispossess.
Moses recounts the time he spent on Mount Sinai, receiving the Ten Commandments from God. He reminds the Israelites of their rebellion during his absence, when they made a golden calf to worship. Moses interceded on their behalf to prevent God’s wrath from consuming them. He also recalls other instances of their disobedience, such as their refusal to enter the land when God first commanded them, leading to their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness.
Moses warns the Israelites against thinking they are righteous and deserving of the land. He reminds them that it is because of the wickedness of the nations inhabiting the land that God is driving them out. He urges them to remember their past failures and humble themselves before God, so they may receive His continued favor.
