Exodus 10:1

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In Exodus 10, the plagues upon Egypt continue, and Moses is sent by God to deliver a message to Pharaoh.

God’s Command to Moses:In this verse, the Lord instructs Moses to go to Pharaoh once again. Despite the ongoing resistance and Pharaoh’s refusal to let the Israelites go, God commands Moses to persist in his efforts.

Hardened Hearts:The verse also mentions that God has hardened Pharaoh’s heart and the hearts of his servants. This refers to God strengthening Pharaoh’s resolve, making him stubborn and unyielding. It’s important to note that the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart was not the initial condition but rather a consequence of his persistent refusal to heed God’s commands.

Purpose of the Signs:God states that He hardened Pharaoh’s heart and allowed these signs and plagues to occur for a specific purpose. These signs were intended to be a demonstration of God’s power and to bring glory to Himself. They were also designed to serve as a testimony to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, displaying God’s authority and demanding their attention and obedience.

Lessons from Exodus 10:1:

  • God’s Sovereignty:The verse emphasizes God’s sovereignty and control over the hearts and actions of individuals, even those in positions of power. God used Pharaoh’s hardened heart as a means to display His glory and fulfill His purposes.
  • Persistence in Obedience:Moses’ obedience to God’s command to go before Pharaoh despite the repeated rejections and hardships is an example of perseverance and faithfulness. It reminds us of the importance of remaining steadfast in obedience to God’s instructions, even when facing opposition or adversity.
  • God’s Desire to Reveal Himself:God’s intention to show His signs before Pharaoh reveals His desire to make Himself known. Throughout the book of Exodus, God repeatedly demonstrates His power, mercy, and faithfulness. It serves as a reminder that God wants to reveal Himself to humanity and invites us to know Him personally.
  • God’s Patient Warning:The series of plagues and signs preceding this verse can be seen as a patient warning from God. He gives Pharaoh and the Egyptians multiple opportunities to recognize His authority and relent. However, their continued resistance leads to increasingly severe consequences.

In conclusion, Exodus 10:1 highlights God’s command to Moses to persist in confronting Pharaoh, the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart, and the purpose of the signs and plagues. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty, the importance of obedience and perseverance, God’s desire to reveal Himself, and His patient warnings to those who oppose Him.
