Exodus 11:3

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.”

Historical Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In Exodus 11, God is preparing to execute the final and most devastating plague upon Egypt, the death of the firstborn. This verse occurs just before the actual event takes place.

Divine Favor:The verse begins by stating that “the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians.” Despite being enslaved and mistreated for many years, God caused the Egyptians to view the Israelites with favour and respect. This favour played a crucial role in the events that followed, as it would contribute to the Israelites’ eventual release from bondage.

Moses’ Greatness:The verse also mentions the greatness of Moses, highlighting his esteemed position in the land of Egypt. Moses was not only recognized by Pharaoh’s servants but also by the general population. This acknowledgment of Moses’ significance underscores the role he played as God’s chosen instrument to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

Significance of Favor and Greatness:The favor shown by the Egyptians and Moses’ greatness were instrumental in accomplishing God’s purposes. The favour allowed the Israelites to receive gifts and provisions from the Egyptians just before their departure, fulfilling God’s promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:14). Moses’ greatness granted him credibility and authority both among the Egyptians and the Israelites, enabling him to effectively communicate God’s instructions and lead the people through the wilderness.

Application:Exodus 11:3 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and His ability to work in extraordinary ways to accomplish His plans. It demonstrates that God can change hearts and attitudes, even of those who have oppressed His people. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of godly leadership and the impact it can have on others.

In summary, Exodus 11:3 reveals God’s favour upon the Israelites in the eyes of the Egyptians and emphasizes Moses’ greatness in the land of Egypt. It showcases God’s power, His ability to change hearts, and the significance of godly leadership.
