Exodus 12:42

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the Lord to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. In this particular verse, God institutes the Passover as an annual observance to commemorate their deliverance from Egypt.

The significance of the night:The verse begins by stating that “It is a night to be much observed unto the Lord.” The night being referred to here is the night of the Passover, when God struck down all the firstborn in Egypt but spared the Israelites who had applied the blood of the sacrificial lamb to their doorposts.

A night of deliverance:The verse emphasizes that this night is significant because it marks the occasion when God brought the Israelites out from the land of Egypt. It symbolises their freedom from bondage and the beginning of their journey toward the Promised Land.

Observance for all generations:God instructs the Israelites to observe this night of the Lord for generations to come. The Passover celebration, which includes the sacrifice and consumption of a lamb, unleavened bread, and bitter herbs, was to be a perpetual reminder of God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

Spiritual application:The Passover holds spiritual significance beyond its historical context. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is identified as the Passover Lamb who was sacrificed for the redemption of humanity. As Christians, we can find symbolism in the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, pointing to our own redemption from sin through faith in Jesus Christ.

Application today:While the Passover is primarily associated with the Jewish faith, it can serve as a reminder to all believers of God’s faithfulness and deliverance. It encourages us to reflect on our own spiritual journey and express gratitude for God’s saving grace.

In conclusion, Exodus 12:42 highlights the significance of the night of the Passover, when God delivered the Israelites from Egypt. The verse emphasises the observance of this night for all generations as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and deliverance. It also carries spiritual meaning for Christians, pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate Passover Lamb.
