Exodus 12:51

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the Lord did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. Exodus 12 describes the institution of the Passover, a significant event in the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt. It was during this time that the final plague, the death of the firstborn, struck the Egyptians, leading Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Verse 51 serves as a summary statement of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt.

Divine Intervention:The verse emphasizes that it was the Lord who brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. Throughout the Exodus narrative, God’s intervention is prominent. God sent Moses as a deliverer, performed miraculous signs and wonders, and ultimately brought about the liberation of His people. This verse acknowledges the supernatural hand of God in the entire process.

The Timing of the Exodus:Exodus 12:51 states that the events occurred “the selfsame day.” This phrase emphasizes the precision and fulfilment of God’s promise. The deliverance happened exactly as God had foretold. The Passover lamb was sacrificed, and on that very day, the Israelites were brought out of Egypt. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His word and His ability to bring about His plans at the appointed time.

Deliverance by Their Armies:The verse mentions that the Lord brought the children of Israel out of Egypt “by their armies.” This refers to the organised and structured manner in which the Israelites left Egypt. Despite being a nation of former slaves, the Israelites were organised into tribes, clans, and families. They left Egypt in a disciplined and orderly fashion, ready for the journey ahead. This demonstrates that God not only delivered them spiritually but also guided them practically in their physical departure from Egypt.

Application:Exodus 12:51 reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His ability to fulfil His promises, and His power to deliver His people. It encourages us to trust in God’s timing and to rely on His guidance as we navigate through our own journeys. Just as God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He can lead us out of any form of bondage or struggle we may face. It also highlights the importance of being prepared and organised as we follow God’s leading. Overall, Exodus 12:51 serves as a summary statement of the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt and underscores God’s active involvement in their deliverance. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His perfect timing, and His ability to lead and guide His people in their journeys of faith.
