Exodus 12:7

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. This particular verse is part of the instructions given to the Israelites regarding the observance of the Passover, which was a significant event leading to their liberation.

The Passover:The Passover was a commemorative feast that marked the last of the ten plagues sent upon Egypt. God commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb, take its blood, and apply it to the doorposts of their houses. The blood on the doorposts served as a sign, and when God saw the blood, He would “pass over” that house, sparing the firstborn from death.

Symbolism of the blood:The blood of the lamb symbolized the sacrificial act of atonement, as well as protection and redemption. In this context, it foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the sacrificial Lamb of God to deliver humanity from sin and eternal death.

Application:While this verse pertains to a specific historical event, it carries spiritual significance for Christians today. The application can be seen in the parallel between the blood on the doorposts and the redemption through the blood of Jesus Christ. Just as the Israelites were protected from the judgment of God by the blood of the lamb, believers are saved from eternal judgment through faith in the blood of Jesus shed on the cross.

Faith and obedience:The Israelites were required to have faith and obedience in following God’s instructions. They had to trust that applying the blood to their doorposts would bring about their deliverance. Similarly, Christians are called to have faith in Jesus Christ and obediently accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Salvation comes through faith in Him alone.

Redemption and liberation:The Passover event marks the liberation of the Israelites from physical slavery. It serves as a powerful reminder that God is the ultimate deliverer. Christians can find assurance in the knowledge that God, through Christ’s sacrifice, has redeemed them from the bondage of sin and offers eternal liberation.

Overall, Exodus 12:7 highlights the significance of the Passover event and foreshadows the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes the importance of faith, obedience, and trust in God’s provision for salvation.
