Exodus 13:16

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the Lord brought us forth out of Egypt.”

Historical Context:The book of Exodus records the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and their journey towards the Promised Land under the leadership of Moses. This verse is part of the instructions given to the Israelites regarding the commemoration of the Passover and the consecration of their firstborn to the Lord.

Symbolic Meaning:In this verse, God commands the Israelites to keep a visible reminder of their deliverance from Egypt. The phrase “a token upon thine hand” and “frontlets between thine eyes” refers to the practice of wearing phylacteries, also known as tefillin, which were small leather boxes containing scriptural passages. The phylacteries were tied to the left arm and worn on the forehead during prayer or specific rituals.

Remembering God’s Deliverance:The purpose of wearing these tokens was to constantly remind the Israelites of God’s mighty act of bringing them out of Egypt “by strength of hand.” It was a way to reinforce their faith and keep the memory of their redemption fresh in their minds. By wearing the phylacteries, the Israelites were visibly identifying themselves as God’s chosen people and acknowledging His faithfulness.

Application Today:While the specific practice of wearing phylacteries is not commonly observed outside of traditional Jewish communities, the principle of remembering God’s deliverance and faithfulness remains relevant for believers today. We can apply this verse by cultivating practices and habits that help us remember God’s goodness and grace in our lives.

Thanksgiving and Worship:Use this verse as a prompt for thanksgiving and worship. Thank God for His faithfulness and deliverance. Praise Him for His strength and power. Express gratitude for His presence in your life, guiding and leading you through challenges and victories alike. Remember, Exodus 13:16 highlights the importance of remembering and acknowledging God’s deliverance. May this verse inspire you to reflect on His goodness and faithfulness, both in biblical history and in your own personal journey of faith.
