Exodus 14:1

Listen to this article

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,"

This verse serves as the introductory statement leading into the account of a significant event in the book of Exodus-the crossing of the Red Sea. To fully understand the context and significance of this verse, it is necessary to explore the events that led up to it.

In Exodus 14, the children of Israel, led by Moses, had been delivered from bondage in Egypt after enduring years of slavery. God had performed numerous miracles and wonders through Moses, demonstrating His power to the Pharaoh and the people of Egypt. These acts included the ten plagues, which eventually led to the release of the Israelites.

However, as the Israelites journeyed toward the Promised Land, Pharaoh had a change of heart and decided to pursue them. When the Israelites realized that Pharaoh and his army were approaching, they became afraid and began to complain to Moses, questioning why they had been brought out of Egypt only to face potential destruction in the wilderness.

At this critical juncture:God spoke to Moses, as recorded in Exodus 14:1. Although the verse itself does not contain specific instructions or information, it sets the stage for what follows-a divine intervention that would demonstrate God’s power and deliverance on behalf of His people.

In the subsequent verses, God gives Moses detailed instructions on how to handle the approaching Egyptian army. God instructed Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea, dividing it so that the Israelites could cross on dry land. As the Israelites obediently followed God’s command, a miraculous event occurred-the sea was divided, and they were able to cross safely.

Meanwhile, the pursuing Egyptian army entered the divided sea after the Israelites. As they were in the middle of the sea, God caused confusion among the Egyptians, causing their chariot wheels to swerve and making it impossible for them to advance. Ultimately, the waters closed in upon the Egyptians, and the entire army perished, while the Israelites witnessed the salvation and victory of God.

The events described in Exodus 14:1 and the subsequent verses highlight God’s faithfulness to His promises and His ability to deliver His people even in seemingly impossible situations. It demonstrates that God’s power transcends human limitations and that He can bring about deliverance when His people place their trust in Him.

Overall, Exodus 14:1 serves as the introduction to an awe-inspiring account of God’s intervention and deliverance, underscoring His sovereignty and His ability to guide His people through challenging circumstances.
