Exodus 14:3

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.”

Context:To better understand Exodus 14:3, it’s important to provide some context. The book of Exodus describes the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt under the leadership of Moses. This verse comes after the ten plagues God brought upon Egypt and just before the crossing of the Red Sea.

Pharaoh’s Perspective:In this verse, God is informing Moses about what Pharaoh’s response will be when he realizes that the Israelites have seemingly become trapped in the wilderness. Pharaoh, who had previously allowed the Israelites to leave Egypt after the tenth plague, had a change of heart and decided to pursue them with his army.

The Wilderness:The term “wilderness” in this verse refers to the desolate and uninhabited region the Israelites found themselves in after leaving Egypt. It was a challenging and unfamiliar environment for the Israelites, and Pharaoh saw it as an opportunity to corner them and bring them back into slavery.

God’s Purpose:Although the situation seemed dire for the Israelites, it was part of God’s plan to demonstrate His power and deliverance. In the following verses, God instructs Moses to lead the Israelites towards the Red Sea, where God would miraculously part the waters, allowing them to cross on dry land.

Lessons for us:

  • Trusting God’s Plan:Exodus 14:3 reminds us that even in difficult circumstances, God is in control. The Israelites may have felt trapped and hopeless, but God had a plan to bring about their deliverance. Likewise, we should trust in God’s sovereignty and have faith that He will work out His purposes in our lives, even when things seem impossible.
  • Testing of Faith:The Israelites’ situation in the wilderness served as a test of their faith and trust in God. Similarly, we often face challenges and obstacles that test our faith. It is during these times that we are called to lean on God, seek His guidance, and trust that He will provide a way forward.
  • God’s Deliverance:Exodus 14:3 points to the incredible deliverance that God brought for the Israelites. The parting of the Red Sea is a powerful reminder that God can make a way where there seems to be no way. It encourages us to believe that God is capable of intervening in our lives and providing deliverance in ways we cannot anticipate.

Overall, Exodus 14:3 teaches us about God’s faithfulness, His ability to work through challenging circumstances, and the importance of trusting in His plan. It encourages us to have faith, even when we feel trapped or overwhelmed, knowing that God is with us and will make a way for us.
