Exodus 15:8

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.”

Context:Exodus 15:8 is part of the song of Moses, which is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God for the miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from the pursuing Egyptian army at the Red Sea. This song is recorded in Exodus 15:1-18 and is often referred to as the “Song of Moses and Miriam.”

Symbolism of God’s Nostrils:The phrase “blast of thy nostrils” is a poetic way of describing God’s breath or the wind that God unleashed upon the waters of the Red Sea. It signifies the powerful and divine intervention of God in parting the waters and facilitating the safe passage of the Israelites. Just as a person blows forcefully through their nostrils, God’s breath or the wind caused a tremendous effect on the sea.

Gathering of the Waters:The verse states that “the waters were gathered together.” This refers to the moment when God caused the waters of the Red Sea to recede and be held back, forming walls on either side. The Israelites were then able to cross on dry ground, while the pursuing Egyptian army was prevented from following them.

Upright Floods:The verse further describes that “the floods stood upright as a heap.” This imagery portrays the waters being held up like a wall or a mound on either side of the Israelites, creating a path in the midst of the sea. It highlights the extraordinary nature of this event, as it defies the natural order of things.

Congealed Depths:The verse concludes by stating that “the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.” This phrase emphasizes the supernatural freezing or solidifying of the depths of the sea. God’s intervention caused the waters to cease their turbulent motion and become firm, allowing the Israelites to pass through safely.

Significance:Exodus 15:8 highlights the incredible power and sovereignty of God over nature. It demonstrates His ability to intervene in extraordinary ways to deliver His people from their enemies. This passage also reveals God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises, as He had previously promised the Israelites that He would bring them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land.

In summary, Exodus 15:8 recounts the remarkable event of the parting of the Red Sea, illustrating God’s power over nature and His deliverance of the Israelites. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His ability to accomplish the seemingly impossible for His people.
