Listen to this article

“This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.”

In this verse, Moses conveys God’s commandment to the Israelites regarding the gathering of manna, the miraculous food provided by God during their time in the wilderness. Let’s delve deeper into the context and explore the significance of this verse.

Background and Context:After leaving Egypt, the Israelites journeyed through the wilderness of Sin, an arid region where they faced hunger and scarcity of food. In response to their complaints, God promised to send bread from heaven, which they would gather each day (Exodus 16:4).

Gathering the Manna:In Exodus 16:16, Moses relays God’s instruction to the Israelites on how to gather the manna. Each person was to collect an omer of manna, an omer being a specific unit of measurement, which was equivalent to about two quarts or two litres. The amount to be gathered was to be according to the individual’s eating, ensuring that each person had enough for their sustenance.

Equality and Provision:The verse emphasises that each person was to gather according to their need, regardless of their family size or capacity. God’s command ensured that everyone would receive an equal share of sustenance. It emphasised God’s provision and care for His people, reinforcing the principle of equality and highlighting the importance of relying on God for their daily needs.

Obedience and Trust:By commanding the Israelites to gather the manna daily, God tested their obedience and trust. The people were instructed to gather only what they needed for the day, except for the day before the Sabbath when they were to gather a double portion to rest on the Sabbath (Exodus 16:22-30). This test challenged the Israelites to trust in God’s daily provision and rely on His faithfulness rather than hoarding or relying on their own efforts.

Spiritual Application:Beyond the literal gathering of manna, this verse holds spiritual lessons for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of relying on God for our daily sustenance, both physically and spiritually. Just as the Israelites gathered manna each day, we are called to seek God’s provision, wisdom, and guidance daily through prayer, reading His Word, and seeking His will.

Additionally, this verse teaches us about contentment and the dangers of excess. The Israelites were instructed to gather enough for their daily needs, which reflects the biblical principle of contentment and trust in God’s provision. It encourages us to seek satisfaction in God rather than pursuing excessive material possessions or being consumed by worldly desires.

In summary, Exodus 16:16 conveys God’s command to the Israelites to gather an omer of manna each day, according to their eating. This verse highlights the principles of equality, provision, obedience, trust, contentment, and reliance on God’s daily sustenance, providing valuable lessons for believers throughout history.
