Exodus 16:22

Listen to this article

"And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses."

Context:Exodus 16 records the account of the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this chapter, the people of Israel are in the desert of Sin, and they begin to grumble against Moses and Aaron, longing for the food they had in Egypt. God responds to their complaints by providing them with manna from heaven, a miraculous bread-like substance, and quails for meat.

Key Points and Lessons:

  • God’s Provision:In verse 22, we see God’s provision and the fulfilment of His promise. On the sixth day, the Israelites gathered twice as much bread (manna) as usual. Throughout their time in the wilderness, God provided the manna to sustain His people. This provision demonstrated God’s faithfulness and care for His chosen nation.
  • Lesson: God is our provider, and He knows our needs. Just as He provided for the Israelites in the wilderness, He will also provide for us in our times of need. We can trust in His faithfulness and rely on Him for our daily sustenance.
  • The Sabbath Rest:Following the provision of twice as much bread on the sixth day, we see the significance of the Sabbath. The rulers of the congregation came and told Moses about the surplus of bread, and Moses instructed them to rest on the seventh day.
  • Lesson: The observance of the Sabbath was a commandment given to the Israelites as a day of rest and worship. It served as a reminder of God’s provision and a time to honour and seek Him. Although the New Testament believers are not bound by the same Sabbath regulations, the principle of setting aside a day for rest, worship, and reflection is still relevant. We should prioritise regular times of rest and seek to cultivate a deeper relationship with God.
  • Trust and Obedience:Throughout their time in the wilderness, the Israelites’ faith and obedience were tested. In the case of gathering manna, God instructed them to collect only what they needed for each day, except for the day before the Sabbath when they were to gather enough for two days. Some people disobeyed God’s command and tried to hoard the manna, but it turned mouldy and filled with worms.
  • Lesson:The incident of the manna teaches us the importance of trusting and obeying God. The Israelites had to rely on God’s provision day by day, demonstrating their dependence on Him. Similarly, we are called to trust in God’s provision and follow His instructions, knowing that He will guide us and meet our needs in His perfect timing.

Application:

  • Reflect on God’s faithfulness in providing for your needs throughout your life. Give thanks for His provision.
  • Set aside regular times of rest, worship, and reflection, seeking to draw closer to God.
  • Practice trust and obedience, relying on God’s guidance and provision in your daily life.

Remember, the Bible is rich in wisdom and truth. As you study God’s Word, seek to understand the broader context and connect it to the overarching message of salvation and God’s love for His people.
