Exodus 16:26

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Exodus that describes the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from slavery in Egypt. During their time in the wilderness, the people of Israel were completely dependent on God for their sustenance. In this context, Exodus 16:specifically addresses the provision of food in the form of manna, which God rained down from heaven to feed the Israelites.

The verse emphasizes the importance of observing the Sabbath, the seventh day of the week, as a day of rest and worship. God commanded the Israelites to gather manna for six days, but on the seventh day, they were instructed not to gather any manna. This command highlights the principle of resting and ceasing from their regular work on the Sabbath day:

There are several significant themes and lessons we can draw from Exodus 16:26:

  • Sabbath Observance:God established the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship for His people. By setting apart one day each week, God intended to provide physical and spiritual refreshment for His people. The command to abstain from gathering manna on the Sabbath:was a test of obedience and a reminder of God’s provision.
  • Trust in God’s Provision:By instructing the Israelites to gather manna for six days and none on the seventh, God was teaching them to trust in His daily provision. The Israelites had to rely on God’s faithfulness and believe that He would sustain them even when they did not work or gather food.
  • Prioritizing Worship:The observance of the Sabbath:was not merely about resting from physical labor but also about dedicating a day to worship and communion with God. It was a time for the Israelites to focus on their relationship with God, to reflect on His goodness, and to offer Him their worship and praise.
  • Dependence on God:The manna in the wilderness was a tangible manifestation of God’s faithfulness and care. By providing daily sustenance, God demonstrated His power and reminded the Israelites that their lives were dependent on Him. The command to abstain from gathering manna on the Sabbath:reinforced their need to rely solely on God for their provision.
  • Foreshadowing Christ:The manna itself holds symbolic significance, as Jesus later identified Himself as the true bread from heaven (John 6:32-35). Just as the Israelites depended on the manna for their physical sustenance, believers are called to depend on Jesus for their spiritual nourishment and eternal life.

In summary, Exodus 16:26:emphasizes the observance of the Sabbath as a day of rest, worship, and trust in God’s provision. It highlights the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God and recognizing our dependence on Him for our physical and spiritual needs.
