Exodus 17:7

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?”

Context:Exodus 17 describes the events that occurred shortly after the Israelites had been delivered from Egypt and were journeying through the wilderness. They had experienced God’s miraculous provision of water from a rock at Rephidim, where this particular incident took place.

The Name of the Place:In this verse, we learn that Moses named the place Massah and Meribah. The name “Massah” means “testing” or “trial,” while “Meribah” means “quarreling” or “strife.” These names were given to commemorate the Israelites’ behaviour and their challenge to God’s presence and provision.

The Chiding of the Children of Israel:The children of Israel were discontented and quarrelsome. They complained against Moses and questioned the presence of the Lord among them. Their lack of faith and constant grumbling were a recurring pattern throughout their wilderness journey.

Tempting the Lord:The Israelites’ statement, “Is the Lord among us, or not?” revealed their doubt and unbelief. Despite witnessing God’s mighty acts of deliverance and provision, they allowed their current circumstances to overshadow their trust in God’s faithfulness.

Lessons for Us:

  • Trust in God’s Presence:The Israelites’ question reveals a lack of trust in God’s presence. As believers, we must remember that God is with us always, even in the midst of challenges and difficulties. He promises never to leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
  • Remember God’s Faithfulness:The Israelites’ forgetfulness of God’s past miracles led to their doubt in the present. We should constantly remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness in our lives and recall the ways He has provided, guided, and protected us in the past.
  • Guard Against Complaining:The Israelites’ tendency to grumble and complain hindered their faith and relationship with God. We should strive to cultivate a grateful heart and refrain from complaining, seeking to find contentment in every circumstance (Philippians 2:14-15).
  • Responding with Faith:Instead of questioning God’s presence, we should respond with faith and seek His guidance and provision. God desires that we trust Him and rely on His strength and wisdom in every situation (Proverbs 3:5-6).

In summary, Exodus 17:7 reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s presence, remembering His faithfulness, avoiding complaint, and responding with faith. May we learn from the Israelites’ example and grow in our reliance on God’s unfailing love and guidance.
