Listen to this article

“And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his wife and his two sons.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey towards the Promised Land. In Exodus 18, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, visits him in the wilderness after hearing about the miracles God had done for the Israelites.

Jethro’s Arrival:In verse 6, Jethro introduces himself to Moses, saying that he, along with Moses’ wife, Zipporah, and their two sons, had come to meet him.

Jethro’s visit carries significance as it marks a pivotal moment in Moses’ life and leadership.

Family Reunion:The mention of Moses’ wife and sons emphasizes the importance of family relationships. Despite the challenges and responsibilities of leading the Israelites, Moses did not neglect his immediate family. This verse highlights the reunion between Moses and his family, which must have brought him joy and comfort.

Support and Encouragement:Jethro’s visit was not merely a social call but a demonstration of support and encouragement. Jethro had witnessed the mighty acts of God and recognized the significance of Moses’ role. His presence served to affirm Moses’ position as the leader chosen by God and provided moral support in the challenging task ahead.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Prioritizing Family:Moses’ commitment to his family serves as a reminder of the importance of balancing our responsibilities. While serving God and fulfilling our duties is crucial, we must also prioritize our relationships with loved ones.
  • Supportive Relationships:Jethro’s arrival showcases the value of having supportive relationships in our lives. We should surround ourselves with individuals who uplift us, provide wise counsel, and strengthen our faith.
  • God’s Provision:The fact that Jethro and Moses’ family journeyed together signifies God’s provision and care. In our own lives, we can trust that God will provide the necessary support and encouragement through various means, including family and friends.

Application:

  • Prioritize your family:Ensure that you invest time and effort into nurturing your relationships with your loved ones. Seek and provide support:Surround yourself with supportive relationships within your family, church, or community. Offer encouragement and assistance to others on their spiritual journey. Recognize God’s provision:Be mindful of the ways in which God provides support and encouragement in your life. Acknowledge and give thanks for the people He brings into your life to uplift you.

In Exodus 18:6, we see the importance of family, the significance of supportive relationships, and the assurance of God’s provision. By studying this verse and its context, we can draw valuable lessons for our own lives and relationships.
