Exodus 19:12

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death.”

Context and Background:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In chapter 19, the Israelites have arrived at Mount Sinai after leaving Egypt. God is about to establish a covenant with the people of Israel and give them the Ten Commandments.

Setting Boundaries:In verse 12, God instructs Moses to set boundaries around Mount Sinai. The people were not to go up the mountain or even touch its border. Anyone who violated this commandment would face the consequence of death.

This command to set boundaries served several purposes:

  • Reverence for God’s Holiness: The mountain was considered holy because God’s presence would descend upon it. The boundaries emphasised the distinction between God’s holiness and the people’s imperfection. By setting limits, God was reminding them of His sacredness and the need for reverence.
  • Protection: The boundaries served to protect the people from harm. Since God’s presence would manifest powerfully on the mountain, approaching it without proper authorisation or preparation could lead to severe consequences.
  • Obedience and Trust: God was testing the obedience and faith of the Israelites. By adhering to the boundaries, they demonstrated their willingness to trust and obey God’s instructions, even when they might not fully understand the reasons behind them.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Reverence for God:The command to set boundaries reminds us of the holiness of God. It teaches us to approach Him with awe, respect, and humility. Just as the Israelites were instructed to treat the mountain as sacred, we should honour God’s presence in our lives and worship Him with reverence.
  • Obedience and Trust:The boundaries set by God required obedience and trust. Similarly, in our relationship with God, obedience and trust are crucial. We must be willing to follow His commandments and trust that His instructions are for our well-being and spiritual growth.
  • God’s Holiness and Our Imperfection:The boundaries highlighted the difference between God’s holiness and the people’s imperfection. It reminds us of our need for redemption and reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the requirements of the law and offers us forgiveness and salvation.
  • Respecting Spiritual Boundaries:The principle of setting boundaries can also apply to our spiritual lives. Just as the Israelites were not to touch the mountain, we should establish personal boundaries to protect ourselves spiritually. This may include avoiding sinful influences, setting healthy limits on our time and energy, and guarding our hearts and minds against negative influences.
  • The Fulfillment in Christ:

The boundaries set in Exodus 19:12 point to the greater separation between a holy God and sinful humanity. However, through Jesus Christ, we have access to God’s presence. The sacrificial death of Jesus tore down the barrier between God and humanity, allowing us to approach Him boldly (Hebrews 10:19-22).

In summary, Exodus 19:12 emphasises the need for reverence, obedience, and trust in our relationship with God. It reminds us of His holiness, our imperfection, and the importance of setting spiritual boundaries. Ultimately, through Jesus Christ, we can approach God with confidence and experience His love and grace.
