“And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them.”

Context:Before we delve into Exodus 19:22 specifically, let’s understand the context of this verse. Exodus 19 recounts the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to Mount Sinai, where God establishes His covenant with them. In this chapter, the Israelites have arrived at Mount Sinai, and Moses goes up the mountain to meet with God.

The Sanctification of the Priests:In Exodus 19:22, God instructs Moses to ensure that the priests who come near to Him sanctify themselves. This sanctification involves setting themselves apart, consecrating themselves, and preparing themselves spiritually and physically for the holy encounter with God.

Significance of Sanctification:Sanctification is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasising the need for purity and separation for those who draw near to God. The priests served as intermediaries between God and the people, representing the people before God and conveying God’s instructions to the people. Thus, their sanctification was crucial for their role and their safety.

The Fear of God’s Presence:The verse warns that if the priests do not sanctify themselves, the Lord may break forth upon them. This phrase indicates the awesome power and holiness of God’s presence. It serves as a reminder that approaching God without reverence and preparation can have serious consequences.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses the priests in the context of the Old Testament, there are lessons we can draw from it today. As believers, we are called to be a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), representing God’s kingdom on earth. We should strive to live lives of sanctification, setting ourselves apart from worldly influences and dedicating ourselves to God.

Spiritual Preparation:Just as the priests had to sanctify themselves before approaching God, we need to prepare ourselves spiritually to come into God’s presence. This includes regular prayer, studying His Word, confessing our sins, and seeking His guidance. It is through this ongoing process of sanctification that we can draw closer to God and experience His presence in our lives.

Reverence and Awe:Exodus 19:22 reminds us of the reverence and awe we should have for God. He is holy, and approaching Him should not be taken lightly. It is important to approach God with a humble and contrite heart, acknowledging His greatness and surrendering our lives to His will.

In summary, Exodus 19:22 highlights the importance of sanctification and reverence when coming near to God. While specifically addressing the priests in the Old Testament, the principles of sanctification and spiritual preparation apply to all believers today. Let us strive to live holy lives, dedicated to God, and approach Him with reverence and awe.
