Exodus 2:1

Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the story of Moses and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Exodus 2:1 is an introductory verse that sets the stage for the birth of Moses.

The House of Levi:The man mentioned in this verse is from the house (or tribe) of Levi. The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). The Levites were chosen by God for specific religious duties, including serving as priests and caretakers of the Tabernacle.

Marriage within the Tribe:The verse states that the man from the house of Levi took a wife from the same tribe. This indicates that the man, later revealed to be Amram (Exodus 6:20), married his aunt, Jochebed. Marriages within the same tribe were common during this period, and it helped preserve the identity and purity of the tribes.

Significance of the Marriage:The marriage between Amram and Jochebed is of particular significance because they become the parents of Moses, who will play a crucial role in leading the Israelites out of Egypt. God’s providence is evident in the choice of Moses’ parents, as their union paves the way for the birth of the great deliverer and prophet.

Foreshadowing:This verse also foreshadows God’s plan for redemption. Moses becomes a pivotal figure in the history of Israel, foreshadowing the ultimate deliverer, Jesus Christ. Just as Moses led the Israelites out of slavery, Jesus came to liberate people from the slavery of sin.

Lessons for us:Although this verse may seem simple, it highlights God’s sovereignty and the importance of our family and heritage. It teaches us that God works through ordinary individuals, using them for extraordinary purposes. It also reminds us of the significance of godly marriages and the role they can play in shaping the destiny of future generations.

In summary, Exodus 2:1 introduces us to the man from the house of Levi who marries a daughter of Levi. This union lays the foundation for the birth of Moses, who will play a crucial role in the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt. The verse showcases God’s providential plan and the importance of family and heritage.
