Listen to this article

“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”

This verse is part of the Ten Commandments, which were given by God to the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai. Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in context.

“Thou shalt not bear false witness”: This phrase prohibits the act of giving false testimony or lying about someone. It emphasises the importance of truthfulness and integrity in interpersonal relationships.

“Against thy neighbor”: The commandment specifically addresses false testimony concerning one’s neighbour. In biblical context, “neighbour” refers not only to someone living nearby but also to any fellow human being.

Key points to consider when studying Exodus 20:16:

  • The significance of truthfulness:This commandment highlights the value of honesty and truth in our interactions with others. God desires His people to speak the truth and avoid spreading falsehoods or lies. In Proverbs 12:22 (KJV), it is written, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.” Honesty is a foundational principle in cultivating trust and fostering harmonious relationships.
  • The consequences of false witness:The act of bearing false witness can have severe consequences. In a legal context, false testimony can lead to injustice, causing harm to innocent individuals. Additionally, spreading lies and false information about others can damage reputations, relationships, and communities. Proverbs 19:5 (KJV) states, “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.”
  • The broader application:While this commandment specifically addresses false testimony, it extends beyond legal settings. It encourages believers to embrace truthfulness in all aspects of life, including their words, actions, and attitudes. Christians are called to be people of integrity, consistently reflecting God’s truth and character.
  • The New Testament perspective:In the New Testament, Jesus expands the understanding of this commandment. In Matthew 5:33-37, He teaches about the importance of keeping one’s word and avoiding oaths, urging His followers to let their “yes” be “yes” and their “no” be “no.” This reinforces the value of honesty and integrity, calling for transparency and trustworthiness in our speech.

In summary, Exodus 20:16 instructs believers to refrain from bearing false witness against their neighbours. It highlights the significance of truthfulness, warns against the consequences of dishonesty, and encourages believers to embody integrity in their relationships. This commandment serves as a reminder of God’s desire for His people to live in truth and to treat others with honesty and respect.
