Exodus 21:15

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.”

Context and Background:Exodus 21 is part of the Book of Exodus, which narrates the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their subsequent journey to the Promised Land. In this chapter, God reveals a series of laws to Moses, known as the “Book of the Covenant,” which addresses various aspects of daily life, including social, civil, and moral matters. These laws provided guidance for the Israelites and emphasised justice and fair treatment.

Understanding the Verse:In Exodus 21:15, a severe punishment is prescribed for anyone who physically strikes their father or mother. The phrase “shall be surely put to death” indicates that the offender would be sentenced to capital punishment. This law reflects the seriousness of the crime and highlights the importance of honouring and respecting one’s parents.

Honouring Parents:The Fifth Commandment, given in Exodus 20:12, states, “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” The law in Exodus 21:15 reinforces the significance of this commandment by establishing a severe penalty for those who commit an act of violence against their parents. It serves as a deterrent, promoting respect and reverence for parents and upholding the sanctity of the family unit.

Parental Authority and Responsibility:This law acknowledges the authority and responsibility parents hold over their children. Parents are tasked with the upbringing, guidance, and protection of their children. Striking one’s parents not only constitutes a physical assault but also challenges the God-given authority placed upon them. By punishing this offence with the death penalty, the law emphasises the gravity of such an act and seeks to maintain order and respect within the family structure.

Application Today:While the Mosaic Law, including Exodus 21:15, was given specifically to the ancient Israelites, its principles can still be applied today. The overarching message remains relevant: the importance of honouring and respecting one’s parents. Christians are encouraged to honour their parents, not only in terms of obedience during childhood but also in adulthood through love, care, and support. This extends to both biological parents and those who have acted as parental figures in one’s life.

It is important to note that the application of the specific punishment prescribed in Exodus 21:15 is not applicable under the New Covenant established by Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Christians are called to exercise forgiveness, love, and reconciliation. However, the fundamental principle of honouring and respecting parents remains unchanged.

In conclusion, Exodus 21:15 reflects the seriousness of striking one’s parents and emphasises the importance of honouring and respecting them. The verse serves as a reminder to value the authority and responsibility parents have been given and to uphold the sanctity of the family unit.
