Exodus 22:11

Listen to this article

“Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.”

This verse is part of a larger passage found in Exodus 22:7-15, which addresses various scenarios related to the loss or damage of someone else’s property. In this particular verse, it deals with a situation where an individual has entrusted their goods or possessions to their neighbour for safekeeping.

The verse begins by stating, “Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both.” This indicates that a solemn oath is to be taken by both parties involved. By invoking the name of the Lord, the oath carries significant weight and is a solemn promise made before God. Taking an oath in the name of the Lord implies that the one making the oath commits to its fulfilment with integrity and honesty.

The first part of the verse continues, “that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods.” Here, it refers to the person who was entrusted with the goods, affirming that they have not taken or used their neighbour’s property for personal benefit. This emphasises the importance of trust and respect for other people’s belongings.

The verse then states, “and the owner of it shall accept thereof.” This means that the owner of the goods or possessions entrusted to their neighbour should accept the oath made by the person who was responsible for safeguarding those items. Accepting the oath demonstrates a recognition of the other person’s integrity and willingness to take responsibility for their actions.

The final part of the verse states, “and he shall not make it good.” This indicates that if the oath is accepted and the person entrusted with the goods has not misused them, they will not be required to make restitution or compensate the owner for any perceived loss. In other words, the person who took the oath is cleared of any accusation of wrongdoing regarding the entrusted property.

Overall, this verse highlights the importance of trust, honesty, and personal responsibility. It underscores the significance of keeping one’s word and being faithful in the stewardship of other people’s possessions. By making an oath before the Lord, individuals are bound to act with integrity and respect towards one another in their dealings and interactions.

It’s worth noting that the Bible contains numerous verses and teachings related to personal conduct, ethics, and relationships with others. Exploring the Scriptures in their entirety can provide a comprehensive understanding of biblical principles and guidance for daily life.
