Exodus 23:1

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In Exodus 23, God gives the Israelites various laws and regulations, including instructions regarding justice and fairness in society.

Prohibition against raising a false report:In this verse, God commands the Israelites not to spread false reports or engage in malicious gossip. This prohibition goes beyond simply refraining from lying; it also encompasses spreading baseless rumours, misinformation, or slander about others. God desires a community built on truth, justice, and love, where false testimonies and deceitful words have no place.

Avoiding association with the wicked:The verse also advises against joining hands with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. This admonition implies that God’s people should not align themselves with evildoers or participate in their schemes or false testimonies. It emphasises the importance of integrity and refusing to compromise one’s commitment to truth, even in the face of pressure or temptation.

Upholding justice and righteousness:Exodus 23:1 underscores the significance of maintaining a just and righteous society. False reports and unrighteous witnessing can lead to injustice, harm innocent individuals, and undermine the fabric of a community. As God’s people, the Israelites were called to promote truth, seek justice, and act as faithful witnesses in all matters.

Application:Although Exodus 23:1 was originally addressed to the Israelites, its principles remain relevant for believers today. As Christians, we are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and avoid participating in or spreading false information. We should strive to be people of integrity and resist any temptation to join hands with the wicked or engage in deceitful practices. Instead, we are to promote justice, righteousness, and the well-being of others.
