“Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.”
Context:The book of Exodus describes the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. In this verse, God is speaking to Moses, instructing him to warn the Israelites about an angel He will send before them.
Beware and Obey:The verse begins with the command to “beware” of the angel and to “obey his voice.” This emphasises the importance of attentiveness and obedience to the divine guidance provided. The Israelites were to pay attention to the angel’s instructions and follow them faithfully.
Provoke Him Not:The verse further advises the Israelites not to provoke the angel. This implies that they should not engage in rebellious behaviour or disregard the angel’s authority. Instead, they were to submit themselves to the angel’s guidance and leading.
No Pardon for Transgressions:God warns that if the Israelites provoke the angel, he will not pardon their transgressions. This highlights the seriousness of their obedience. It indicates that disobedience and rebellion would have consequences, and God would hold them accountable for their actions.
God’s Name in the Angel:The verse concludes with the statement, “for my name is in him.” This suggests that the angel carries the authority and representation of God Himself. The presence of God’s name within the angel signifies the significance and divine nature of the instructions given.
Application:
- Obedience and attentiveness to God’s guidance are essential in our lives. We should strive to listen to His voice and follow His commands diligently.
- Provoking God’s divine messengers, whether in the form of angels or the Holy Spirit, can have serious consequences. We should avoid rebellion and instead submit ourselves to their guidance.
- Recognising God’s presence and authority in His messengers should encourage us to respect and obey them, knowing that they represent Him.
Overall, Exodus 23:21 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and attentiveness to God’s guidance and the consequences of disregarding His commands. It encourages us to submit ourselves to His authority and follow His instructions faithfully.
