Exodus 23:32

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.”

Exodus 23:32 is part of a passage where God is giving instructions to the Israelites regarding their conquest of the Promised Land. In this verse, God specifically warns the Israelites not to make any covenants or agreements with the people who currently inhabit the land, nor with their gods.

This commandment is significant because God wanted the Israelites to maintain their distinct identity as His chosen people and to avoid being influenced by the pagan practices and false gods of the nations around them. The Israelites were to remain faithful to the one true God and not compromise their worship or obedience to Him.

Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly emphasized the importance of avoiding idolatry and worshiping Him alone. Making covenants with the inhabitants of the land and their gods would have been a direct violation of this principle. God knew that if the Israelites entered into alliances or agreements with these pagan nations, they would likely be led astray from their exclusive devotion to Him.

This commandment also highlights the spiritual battle that the Israelites faced. They were entering a land that was filled with idolatry and false worship, and they needed to be vigilant in preserving their faith in God. Making covenants with the people and their gods would have entangled the Israelites in practices and beliefs that were contrary to God’s commands.

In a broader sense, this commandment can be applied to believers today. While we may not be entering a physical land, we face a spiritual battle against the influences of the world. As Christians, we are called to separate ourselves from the values and practices of the world and remain devoted to God alone. We should not make alliances or compromises that would lead us away from our faith and obedience to God.

In summary:Exodus 23:32 reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to God and not entering into covenants or agreements with practices or beliefs that contradict His commands. It encourages us to maintain our distinct identity as God’s people and to worship and obey Him alone.
