Exodus 24:11

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.”

Exodus 24:11 is part of the account of the ratification of the covenant between God:and the people of Israel at Mount Sinai. In this verse, Moses, along with Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders of Israel, ascend the mountain to have a special encounter with God.

The phrase “he laid not his hand” refers to God:refraining from extending any harm or punishment to the nobles of Israel who were present on the mountain. This emphasizes God’s:grace and favor toward them during this sacred occasion.

The following part of the verse states that these individuals “saw God.” It’s important to note that the Bible generally emphasizes that no one can see God:and live (Exodus 33:20). Therefore, the phrase “saw God” likely suggests that they were granted a unique and awe-inspiring manifestation of God’s:glory, although the fullness of His divine essence was not revealed to them.

Furthermore, the verse mentions that they “did eat and drink.” This statement indicates that after their encounter with God, the participants were able to partake in a celebratory meal or feast. This communal meal may have symbolized the establishment of the covenant, signifying the fellowship and union between God:and the people of Israel.

Overall, Exodus 24:11 highlights the extraordinary experience of the nobles of Israel as they were able to witness God’s:presence and partake in a meal together after the covenant was ratified. It illustrates God’s:graciousness and the special relationship He established with the Israelites during this significant moment in their history.
