“And the glory of the LORD abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.”
Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In Exodus 24, the people of Israel have received the Ten Commandments from God through Moses, and now they are about to enter into a covenant with the Lord.
The Glory of the LORD:In this verse, we see that the glory of the LORD descended upon Mount Sinai. The glory of God often symbolises His presence and divine manifestation. It represents the visible manifestation of His greatness, power, and holiness. The people of Israel witnessed the glory of the LORD in the form of a cloud covering the mountain.
The Cloud:The cloud that covered Mount Sinai is significant throughout the Exodus narrative. It is referred to as the “cloud of the LORD’s presence” (Exodus 13:21) and the “pillar of cloud” (Exodus 33:9). This cloud symbolised God’s guidance, protection, and presence with the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness.
The Duration:The cloud covered Mount Sinai for six days, indicating that the manifestation of God’s glory and the divine encounter were not fleeting or momentary. God’s presence remained with them for an extended period, allowing the people to witness and experience the awe-inspiring display of His glory.
The Call to Moses:On the seventh day, God called out to Moses from the midst of the cloud. This highlights Moses’ unique role as the mediator between God and the people of Israel. Throughout the Exodus account, Moses serves as the intermediary, receiving God’s instructions and conveying them to the people.
Spiritual Lessons:
- The Importance of God’s Presence:The descent of God’s glory upon Mount Sinai demonstrates the significance of His presence. It reminds us of the reverence and awe we should have when approaching God. God desires to manifest Himself to His people and make His presence known.
- The Faithfulness of God:The six-day duration of the cloud covering the mountain reveals God’s faithfulness to His promises. He had led the Israelites out of Egypt and was now fulfilling His promise to meet them at Mount Sinai. God’s faithfulness endures, and He remains true to His word.
- The Mediatorship of Moses:Moses’ role as a mediator between God and the people foreshadows the ultimate mediator, Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus becomes the mediator of a new covenant between God and humanity, providing access to God’s presence for all who believe in Him.
- Patience and Preparation:The six days of waiting before God’s call to Moses teach us about patience and preparation. Sometimes, God asks us to wait and be still before Him. These periods of waiting can be times of spiritual preparation and anticipation for the divine encounter that awaits us.
In conclusion, Exodus 24:16 highlights the manifestation of God’s glory upon Mount Sinai, the significance of His presence, the cloud as a symbol of His guidance, and Moses’ role as a mediator. It also teaches us about the faithfulness of God, the importance of patience and preparation, and points us to Jesus as the ultimate mediator between God and humanity.
