Exodus 24:6

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.”

Context:The book of Exodus narrates the story of the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In Exodus 24, the Israelites gather at the base of Mount Sinai, and Moses prepares to ratify the covenant between God and the people.

The Covenant Ceremony:In this verse, Moses takes half of the blood from the sacrificial offerings and puts it in basins. This blood represents the establishment of a covenant between God and the Israelites. The other half of the blood is sprinkled on the altar, symbolising the consecration of the altar as a holy place.

The Significance of Blood:In biblical times, blood held great significance. It was viewed as the source of life and had atoning power. In this covenant ceremony, the shedding of blood signifies the seriousness and binding nature of the covenant. The Israelites understood that bloodshed represented a commitment to the terms of the covenant and the consequences of breaking it.

Foreshadowing of Christ’s Sacrifice:The shedding of blood in this ceremony foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The New Testament reveals that Jesus’ death and the shedding of His blood established a new covenant between God and humanity, offering forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe in Him. The blood of sacrificial animals in the Old Testament pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, whose blood cleanses us from sin.

Symbolic Meaning of Sprinkling:The act of sprinkling the blood on the altar symbolises the purification and sanctification of the altar. It represents the dedication of the altar as a holy place where sacrifices were made and communion with God was facilitated. The sprinkling of blood is seen throughout the Old Testament as a means of consecration and purification.

Application:The covenant ceremony described in Exodus 24:6 reminds us of the importance of commitment and obedience in our relationship with God. Just as the Israelites entered into a covenant with God, we, as believers in Christ, enter into a new covenant through faith. We should strive to honour our commitment to God, walking in obedience to His commands and relying on the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood shed for our salvation.

In summary, Exodus 24:6 portrays the covenant ceremony between God and the Israelites, emphasising the significance of blood as a symbol of commitment and the foreshadowing of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice. It reminds us of the importance of our covenant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, calling us to obedience and reliance on His cleansing power.
